Indonesian Beef Rendang Recipe: Tender Beef in Aromatic Spice

Experience the rich and complex flavors of Indonesia with this traditional Beef Rendang recipe. Known for its tender beef and aromatic spices, Rendang is a slow-cooked dry curry that’s perfect for special occasions or a comforting meal at home. Follow this detailed recipe to create an authentic Indonesian dish that will impress your family and friends.

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg beef, cut into chunks
  • 4 shallots, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 stalks lemongrass, bruised
  • 1 inch ginger, grated
  • 1 inch galangal, grated
  • 3 cups coconut milk
  • 2 tbsp chili paste
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Aromatics:

  • Heat a large pot over medium heat. Add a small amount of oil.
  • Sauté the chopped shallots, minced garlic, bruised lemongrass, grated ginger, and grated galangal until they become fragrant and the shallots are translucent.

2. Cook the Beef:

  • Add the beef chunks to the pot and brown them on all sides. This step helps to seal in the juices and adds depth to the flavor.

3. Add Spices:

  • Stir in the chili paste, turmeric powder, and coriander powder. Mix well to coat the beef evenly with the spices.

4. Simmer with Coconut Milk:

  • Pour in the coconut milk and stir to combine.
  • Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer uncovered for 2-3 hours. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and to ensure the beef cooks evenly.
  • Continue to simmer until the beef is tender and the sauce has thickened to a rich, dry consistency. The oil will separate from the coconut milk and rise to the top, which is a sign that your Rendang is ready.

5. Final Seasoning:

  • Add salt to taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.

6. Serve:

  • Serve the Beef Rendang with steamed rice. Garnish with fresh herbs like cilantro or kaffir lime leaves for an added burst of flavor.
